How to Be Confident in Your Workplace - Vania Yin

Growing up, I use to think that confidence can only be attained when you have reached a certain level of perfection. But I have now learned that the key to confidence is not about having it all together. In fact, it is all about having the ability to embrace our brokenness and weaknesses. Like what is said in 2 Corinthians 2:19: ‘But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.’

It is about being comfortable in my work-in-progress state and being confident that God is doing a great work in and through me.

Upon finishing a degree in Accounting & Finance, for some unbelievable coincidences, I found myself doing Sales for my first job. And if you know me from years back, you would know the timid, quiet self that I was - and no way one would ever think that I would be cut out for a Sales job. But 3 years forward, as I surrender my everyday into God’s hands and continuously acknowledge Him as my source of confidence, I have seen myself being transformed into the person that God has called me to be. Not only did I find my purpose and calling, He has also favoured me beyond the unthinkable with successes, promotions, incredible bosses and colleagues.

If you are struggling with confidence, here are some areas to inspect;

Check your source.

Do you get your confidence from God or in what you can do? Are you putting your identity on your work? A great question to test this: if you are to lose your job today, will you still trust that God has a plan and a purpose for you? Regular heart-checks are vital - check your intentions and motivations. Make sure your work does not become your identity. The only strong, everlasting foundation to build your identity upon is God. He is your rock.

Realign your perspective.

I love what Ps Matt says: ‘instead of debating over half full or half empty glasses, be thankful that you have a glass!’. Perspective is key and gratitude is a great one to have. Instead of questioning: “Why am I here?”, why don’t you start asking God: “What do you want me to learn from this season?”.

The voices you listen to will lead to the choices you make.

Whose voices are you allowing into your lives? Do they speak faith or fear? Do they remind you of how big your problem is, or how big your God is? Do they encourage you to trust the process, or to quit and give up? Show me your friends and I will show you your future, because who you surround yourself with, you become. (...)

As we push further into 2021, one thing we learn is that nothing in life except for Jesus is certain. Therefore, as Proverbs 3:5-6 says: Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight. Put God first, seek what He says and trust Him with all your heart! Walk into area of life this year with bravery & confidence knowing that God’s got you. Have the best year ahead!
