Rose Coloured Glasses - Amy Lee

Meaning of rose-coloured glasses: An optimistic perception of something; a positive opinion; seeing something in a positive way, often thinking of it as better than it actually is. This is also known in our Christian world as speaking life into and over our circumstances.

The opposite to this is seeing through the lens of our past experiences. What we have watched, read and listened to can affect the lens in which we see life and situations. Everyone sees through a lens! What lens are you seeing your marriage through?

There was a marriage seminar coming up at church, I was super excited that maybe this would help our marriage. I turned to my husband and asked if we can go? He replied with a ‘NO’. Huh? What do you mean? He responded with, ‘I don’t think we need it’’…

This really confused me. Why would he think that we did not need to go while I thought we desperately needed to? In a way I was always thinking our marriage was not ‘ok’ and needed to be fixed.

But my marriage did not need fixing, my perception needed shifting.

During my prayer time I had a revelation… I have been putting expectations on my husband and my marriage that were unrealistic. At an alter call, someone prayed for me and they saw an image of me wearing tinted glasses, I knew then that I was looking at my husband through those glasses. The experiences in my life gave me rose coloured glasses to look through, they were tinted with my past hurts and brokenness.

Wearing tinted glasses and having unrealistic expectations also came from the things that I was watching and reading. Romantic movies and books were my thing, I absolutely loved them. That was until the truth was revealed that I was altering my perception of what a husband should be like, how they should treat their wife and what marriage should look like. I got deceived into seeing through the lens of fantasy. God’s word says in Matthew that your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is filled with light. But when your eye is unhealthy, your whole body is filled with darkness.

The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. Matthew 6:22 (NLT)

I have now taken off those tinted glasses!
Now I can see clear!
Now I can see the truth!
Now I have a healthy perception of what marriage should be!
Now I speak life into my marriage!
Now I speak life into my husband!

May I ask you today, what lens are you looking through
