Making a House a Home - Pamela Mohan

To me home is where we usually spend most of our time therefore it is of utmost importance that our home reflects us and relates to our sense of happiness and peace.

Home is a place where we return to feel belonging, a place of retreat, a space of sanctuary. It is not merely a space - it breathes, it has a life, it evokes emotions, it uplifts, it inspires. Each home has a character painted by the owner. It is a reflection of the owners’ taste, history, aspiration and day-to-day life.

My home is the amalgamation of the rich characters, expressions and experiences of myself and my loved ones. It is a celebration of all of our quirks, our loves, and our true selves. It has evolved organically with time and it’s depth reflects our journey as a family.

Creating the right ambience is something I strive for with my home, by igniting the senses, making one feel at peace and inspired.

A positive atmosphere is very important, there is always worship music playing in my home. It sets the mood for the space and an uplifting tune in the morning gets the family in the right frame of mind, preparing them for the day. Some of my favourite playlist from Spotify include the 2020 Kingdomcity Setlist, Beautiful at Home and some Jazzy Romance is perfect at dinner.

Here are some of my simple tips on how to transform your house into a  home!

Colour

My home is filled with bright colours, patterns, textures and shapes as I believe in having fun while expressing myself. My family is a young family and it is important for me to make us feel young, vibrant and interesting. To avoid the look from becoming cluttered, I would balance it off with some neutral pieces, like my neutral coloured couch on my turquoise blue carpet. I love collecting vibrant decorative pieces which I would pepper throughout my home and I would move them around to change the look according to my mood and season.

Scent

To complement the background tunes, I would ensure my home is infused with scents and fragrances of my choice. My personal favourites include scented candles, incense, essential oils and diffusers from Diptique- BAIES, and Young Living. Not only do the essential oils make my home smell pleasant, it is also beneficial to the health and mental wellbeing of my family. Some of my favourite scents are Lavender, Peace & Calming and Joy.

Plants

To bring some movement and softness into my home, I love using plants as part of my decoration. I have become what you would call, a plant obsessed person. Not only do my plants make my home cozy, it also helps to keep the air in my home fresh and clean, something I find very important especially living in a busy city like Singapore. Some of my favorite plants that I have at home require minimal care and maintanence, like the Fiddle-Leaf Fig Tree (Ficus Lyrata) and Split-Leaf Philodendron (Monstera Deliciosa). Every week, I would also treat myself to fresh blooms, flowers and leaves that I would place proudly on my dining table.

Photos + Frames

Finally, to bring in love and warmth into my home, I put up pictures of my family and loved ones which I frequently update and move around. It is important for me to surround myself with the people who love me and my family, especially since we are living away from our home country. It also helps us to stay grounded, be thankful for our blessings, and pass on the love to others.

When daily havoc leaves you blurred, having bible verses can make you feel grounded and optimistic. Throughout my home I have bible verses framed up and love having it there as a constant reminder of God’s faithfulness to us through every season.

Above all, this verse sums up the most important element of my home: Colossians 3:14 “And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity”.
