Becoming A Fear-Less Mum - Sin Yee
A mom's life can feel like that of a servant. The kids need this, the husband needs that, the clothes needs this, the food needs that. If we’re brave enough – or smart enough – to write a to-do list, we see the true scope of the tasks placed at our feet, and it’s easy to think, ‘if I went away, even for a few days, this place would fall apart’. And, maybe, it actually would! But, perhaps, a more relevant and confronting reality is whether it will fall apart while we are still here, trying desperately to meet the basic needs of multiple humans whom we love, dearly. Recently, I experienced a minor drama that caused me to stop and take stock of my priorities in my home.
We all know that there is no such thing as a perfect mother, but we can subtly fall prey to the lie of the enemy that we can prove them wrong! One morning, while driving to work after dropping the kids off at school, my to-do list of 1001 items was rolling around in my head like the credits at the end of a movie. Becoming overwhelmed by the tasks at hand, worry began to fill my mind, then anxiety, then fear! Fear that I won't get anything done on time; fear that I will be late to pick up my kids; fear that I’ll forget to pick up some milk; fear that my bills won't get paid; fear, fear, fear! For a split second, I was out of breath as though I was drowning, but then, I defaulted to the only coping mechanism that I knew could catch me – I began to speak loudly in the language of the Holy Spirit.
Only then could I hear the Holy Spirit say, "You are a CHILD OF GOD, so there is NOTHING to fear". Peace replaced the heavy atmosphere in my car, immediately, and the chaos raging within me, suddenly stopped. As I repeated to myself what God had spoken, "I am a child of God, so there is nothing to fear...NOTHING to fear", I found a surge of faith rising within me that everything is going to be OK. Fear left, faith filled my heart, and I was no longer overwhelmed. overcoming
While doing everything that moms need to do, we have an important choice.
We must choose to either focus on the magnitude of the load and the high expectation, or focus on our ever-present God who has the strength we need to win. If you find yourself drowning in the ‘to-do's, the chances are that you have forgotten that you are a child of God, and there is nothing to fear or to worry about, just like I had. God reminds us that we are, first and foremost, His daughter whom He loves. He reminds us that, with Him, all things are possible, and that He will pick us up when we fall. We must be convinced that life will not fall apart as long as He is in the picture.
Just like a child who is confident when their parents are around, we, too, can have peace knowing that we have nothing to fear, because the Father’s here.
